Description

This presentation explores the impact of recent submarine cable outages in the Baltic Sea and how the Internet adapted to maintain connectivity. Using RIPE Atlas measurements, we analyze latency shifts, packet loss, and rerouting patterns following incidents affecting the BSC East-West and C-LION1 cables.

Summary

This presentation explores the impact of recent submarine cable outages in the Baltic Sea and how the Internet adapted to maintain connectivity. Using RIPE Atlas measurements, we analyze latency shifts, packet loss, and rerouting patterns following incidents affecting the BSC East-West and C-LION1 cables. The data reveal that while minor latency increases were observed, network resilience mechanisms—such as inter-domain and intra-domain rerouting—ensured continued operation with minimal disruption. These findings highlight the importance of redundancy in network design and the need for continuous monitoring to enhance Internet resilience in the face of physical infrastructure failures
