Description
LLMs have greatly improved recently with the advent of reasoning models. We will set the scene by showing the results of LLM benchmarking tests against networking certification exams. We will then show an example in which an LLM, in conjunction with a Junos MCP server, configures, tests and documents BGP Roles (RFC 9234).
Summary
First I will show the scores that Opus 4.7 achieved on three tiers of a network certification exam track. This is to show that a general-purpose LLM has decent networking knowledge. I then describe a network outage that occurred a few years ago, and show that if LLMs had existed at the time, they would have found the root cause much faster. The main part of the talk steps through how I had an LLM configure, test and docuument BGP Roles with just a few prompts along the way. Effectively, the LLM works in an intent-based manner as my instructions were fairly vague but it filled in the missing details itself. The LLM proved to be a valuable time saver -it would have taken much longer to carry the work manually.
